The High Cost of Being a Woman

Menstruation is a part of most female’s lives. However, in the United States, many women and school-aged girls do not have access to feminine hygiene products. This is mainly due to the high costs.

Unfortunately, often these women resort to using paper towels, rags and cloths each month. Not only is this highly unsanitary it can lead to serious infections and illness.

Shockingly, within the public school system, many students are absent from class during their period as they can’t afford pads and tampons. Often they are too ashamed to attend school.

Feminine hygiene products can be expensive because in some states they are subject to sales tax. However, over the last few years, a number of states have considered removing, or have already removed, them from this tax.

Currently there are 12 states that do not impose a sales tax on feminine hygiene products. More states will follow suit over the next while.

Affordable or Free Feminine Hygiene for the Disadvantaged

Considering there are approximately 50,000 women living on the streets across the United States, access to affordable feminine hygiene is so important. People are fighting to create a national system to meet the needs of disadvantaged females.

Measures would include making pads and tampons free of charge in homeless shelters, public schools and prisons.

New York City implemented this initiative in 2016. The city provides approximately 2 million tampons and 3.5 million pads each year to homeless shelters. It costs $2.5 million annually.

Tampons

A tampon is worn internally and absorbs menstrual blood and fluid.

It is not healthy to wear a tampon for more than 6 hours at a time. Prolonged use of a single tampon can result in infection or even Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

Sanitary Pads

Sanitary napkins, towels or pads absorb any blood or discharge outside of the vagina. For example they are used during menstruation or for post-birth bleeding.

Some pads are single use but you can also purchase cloth sanitary pads. The great thing about reusable cloth pads is they can be washed and dried for multiple uses.

Menstrual Cups

Incredibly, the average woman will use up to 16,000 pads or tampons in their lifetime! This results in a huge waste problem.

Eco-conscious women are now turning to reusable menstrual cups.

Menstrual cups are shaped like a bell and are made of soft, flexible material such as rubber or medical-grade silicone. They are inserted into the vagina and can be left in for up to 12 hours.

The quickest and easiest way to remove and clean it is in the shower. Just empty it and wash it with warm water and soap.

Intimate Wipes and Feminine Hygiene Wipes

Feminine towelettes contain a gentle cleansing solution, This helps to keep your intimate areas clean and sanitized.

Also called feminine antibacterial wipes, they can also deodorize. As they are only for use on the outside of the intimate areas, they neutralize any odors without disturbing the delicate inner bacterial balance.
